about.txt
DC205 is Birmingham's chapter of the global DEF CON Groups network — a community of hackers, security engineers, students, and anyone else who thinks breaking things is the best way to understand them.
We're not a corporate security meetup. No vendor pitches. No suits required. Just people who are genuinely into the craft — from binary exploitation to lock picking to social engineering to RF hacking.
Whether you're writing your first Python script or you've been reversing malware since the dial-up era, you belong here.

- No. Seriously, no. We have people ranging from "I just installed Linux for the first time" to "I present at DEF CON main stage." The only requirement is genuine curiosity and not being a jerk about skill levels.
- Yes. Everything we do is legal and ethical. CTFs are designed to be attacked. Practice labs are sandboxed environments. We don't hack things we don't have explicit permission to hack. This isn't negotiable — see the Code of Conduct.
- Zero. Nothing. Free. DEF CON Groups are volunteer-run community organizations. We don't charge membership fees, we don't sell anything, and we don't have sponsors trying to sell you EDR solutions.
- Monthly, in Birmingham. The exact date and location are announced in Discord because it occasionally changes. Join the Discord, check the #announcements channel. That's the authoritative source.
- Please do. We actively want people to present — 5 minutes or 45 minutes, polished deck or live terminal demo. Reach out in Discord and we'll get you on the schedule.
- Absolutely. We have members from UAB, Samford, Auburn, and other schools. Students often have more time to go deep on topics that working professionals have to rush past. Your enthusiasm is an asset.
cat code-of-conduct.md
DC205 operates under the DEF CON Code of Conduct. The short version:
-
Be excellent to each other. Harassment, discrimination, and targeted hostility are not tolerated. This applies to meetups, Discord, and any DC205-associated context.
-
Hack ethically. Only attack systems you own or have explicit written permission to test. "But it was a good learning opportunity" is not a defense.
-
Don't be a narc, but don't tolerate crime. We don't ask about your day job or your past. We do expect you not to plan or celebrate illegal activity in our spaces.
-
Skill gatekeeping gets you removed. If you make someone feel stupid for not knowing something, you're out. We were all beginners once.
-
Violations. Report to organizers in Discord. We take it seriously. Consequences range from conversation to permanent ban depending on severity.
